Shields Memorial Golf Tournament Scheduled for May 8, 2015

April 3, 2015

The 36th Annual Shields Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Twin Shields Golf Club on Friday, May 8, 2015.  This year’s tournament continues to recognize the past achievements of Ray, Bob, and Roy Shields in promoting the game of golf and the golf course superintendent profession. However the tournament also provides a legacy in the form of an endowment fund which supports scholarships and also covers the cost for student travel to various professional meetings.

This year we sent 11 students to national competitions in the areas of golf course and sports turf management. We accomplished a three-peat in winning the 2015 Sports Turf Student Challenge Championship! Though we did not repeat as national champions in the Collegiate Turf Bowl, we placed 2nd in a field of 69 teams. These two major accomplishments illustrate the quality and reputation of excellence in our Turfgrass Management program at the University of Maryland.

Since the tournament’s inception in 1983, 108 scholarships have been awarded to deserving students in our Turfgrass program. With rising costs associated with college expenses these scholarships have played a significant role in allowing students to reach their educational goals.

We would like you to be a sponsor for the 2015 tournament.  The sponsorship fee is $300.00 and sponsors will be recognized at individual holes and at our sponsor’s board adjacent to the club house. Your sponsorship donation is tax deductible and will be used entirely to support the turfgrass instructional program at the Institute of Applied Agriculture.  To be a sponsor you can now register online and pay by starting at https://www.glenndalegolfclub.com/online-store/  or you can complete the enclosed sponsorship form and return it to Glenn Dale Golf Club by April 24th.

The positive impact of your contribution not only includes the 108 scholarship recipients to date, but also the hundreds of students who have benefited from attending professional meetings and the hands-on use of state of the art field and laboratory equipment used in our turfgrass management classes.

Once again, thank you for supporting this benefit program.
